Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
